  1. Zhu De, or Chu Teh 1886-1976. Chinese Red
  2. Army leader from 1931. He devised the tactic
  3. of mobile guerrilla warfare and organized the
  4. Long March to Shaanxi 1934-36. He was made a
  5. marshal 1955. The son of a wealthy Sichuan
  6. landlord, Zhu served in the Chinese Imperial
  7. Army before supporting Sun Yat-sen in the
  8. 1911 revolution. He studied communism in
  9. Germany and Paris 1922-25 and joined the
  10. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on his return,
  11. becoming commander in chief of the Red Army.
  12. Working closely with Mao Zedong, Zhu
  13. organized the Red Army's Jiangxi break-out
  14. 1931 and led the 18th Route Army during the
  15. liberation war 1937-49. He served as head of
  16. state (chair of the Standing Committee of the
  17. National People's Congress) 1975-76.
